The American Government course is based upon the state-mandated Social Studies curriculum, which covers various topics including an examination of the Founding Documents, which form the basis for the United States of America and how the American people govern themselves at national, state and local levels of government.​​ Specific themes revolve around how citizens participate in a representative democracy, the specific foundations of the American government, the structures and functions of the American government, the changes in the American government, and the relationship between the government and the economy.

Specific Units include:
Unit 1: Foundations of Government               Unit 6: The Executive Branch
Unit 2: Building a Government                         Unit 7: The Executive Branch at Work
Unit 3: The Constitution                                     Unit 8: Political Parties, Public Opinion, and the Media
Unit 4: The Judicial Branch                                Unit 9: Ohio's Constitution
Unit 5: The Legislative Branch
